The Magic of Christmas

When the soft winter sunshine caresses the face, the heart starts dancing to the tune of carols and jingle of bells. The charm of Christmas is not solely bound in the melodies of the Church choir, it wafts through the air in the aroma outside the bakery; it comes alive in the resplendent look of the bazaars selling Christmas wares painted in vibrant hues; and most importantly, it finds place in the hearts of the people who bask in the memories of the year yet to be named the yester year.

Nevertheless, the look on the jubilant faces of the little ones beaming with the excitement of meeting their dear old Santa Clause is an unparalleled beauty. Is Santa merely a figment of imagination of the little ones? Or, we might say, the ethereal embodiment of everything ever so pure and hearty.

How the Little Adamites Celebrated Christmas

The ethos of Christmas lies in its spirit of love, generosity and togetherness. It is a time to embrace kindness, reflect on gratitude, and share joy with others, transcending boundaries of culture and creed. The festival radiates warmth through acts of giving, the comfort of family gatherings, and the magic of traditions that spark happiness in the young and old alike. Christmas reminds us of the beauty in simple moments – a heartfelt gift, a shared meal, or the glow of lights symbolizing hope and renewal.

Embracing the selfsame spirit of Christmas, our tiny tots took us on a joyride on the breezy December morn of the 20th, embellishing the waning year of 2024 with their adorable display of skits. Truly, there isn’t anything more blessed than seeing the little ones perform to the best of their abilities, beautifully guided by their teachers. Thus, the walls of Adamas International School reverberated with celebrations of Christmas with the little Adamites of the pre-primary section filling up every corner of their classrooms with festive cheer.

Learning through Caring

Through various activities and thematic presentations, the children bonded creatively, spreading delight amongst all, while at the same time adhering to active and collaborative learning that encourages pupils to work together to accomplish shared goals. The activities encapsulated themes such as ‘preservation of nature and wildlife’, ‘the importance of  cleanliness and associated good habits’, ‘breaking stereotypes’, ‘imbibing qualities of responsibility, gratitude and mindfulness’, understanding the  adage ‘sharing is caring’ – thus adding meaning to the  celebrations by embracing the values that the festival of Christmas is imbued with.

Each of these presentations was lapped up in a vibrant display of camaraderie. To convey the message of importance of cleanliness, the children put up an act wherein they littered the classroom floor with wrappers, while one child picked them up and disposed them in the trash can. Such conscientious acts go a long way in creating awareness about their surroundings by fostering social-emotional learning amongst the toddlers.

The act that was put up against the theme of breaking stereotypes was one of a kind. The toddlers slipped into different attires, posing as little police personnel, doctor, lawyer, homemaker, chef, farmer, grocer, fitting into varied job roles, showcasing how every job deserves respect and gratitude. This act was a scathing criticism of and a social commentary on the bigotry and prejudice that our society still grapples with.

Next, it was the selfish giant’s turn to enthrall the audience with his endearing performance. The retelling of the story was done with all innocence and mastery as the children consciously learned and showed through their act how the world will transform into a better place if we understand the implication of the words “sharing is caring” – after all, that is what Christmas stands for – love, care and spreading smiles.

The Pedagogical Approach

Pedagogically, these acts would not only help them develop self awareness and social awareness, but also cultivate relationship skills and decision-making skills, acquainting the children with real-world experiences through simulated situations by virtue of using the learning-by-doing method, wherein pupils are given the opportunity to collaborate and understand the implications of their actions. Furthermore, it also promotes Social-Emotional Learning amongst them, significantly impacting their well being by developing  their emotional intelligence and resilience.

The Spirit of Christmas Lives on

In a world often caught up in the rush, the kind acts of Christmas serve as a gentle reminder to return to the heart of celebration – a celebration of love, generosity, and the enduring power of giving from the heart. After all, the spirit of Christmas is found in our hearts, in moments that spread love, joy and hope.
